The students have taken field trips to the local Kroger grocery store to perform market research on the different types of lemonade that are available. They have spent time on the telephone drumming up investment support for funding to purchase supplies and ingredients. Students have also negotiated with local businesses for space to operate their lemonade stands.

All of this work has been in preparation for Galveston’s Lemonade Day. Lemonade Day is an event that aims to make entrepreneurs of Galveston’s youth. This event will be held on Sunday, May 6th at locations all over Galveston Island.

Support OA students on May 6th by purchasing lemonade from their stands around the island. OA students will be at EZ Cruise Parking, Moody Gardens Hotel Lobby, Rita’s, Gracie’s, Kroger, Rainforest Café, Yaga’s, The Float, The Galvestonian, and Murdoch’s.

On April 3, 2012, Odyssey Academy held its first induction ceremony for the Odyssey Academy Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. The ceremony was held in the school’s Resource Center in front of parents, staff members, and many of the inductees’ peers.

The ceremony began with the procession of the NJHS Faculty Council and inductees into the Resource Center. Mr. Markle welcomed the students and their friends and families to the ceremony and commended inductees on the quality of character consistently shown at school. Parents were also thanked for instilling values into their children which will ensure their success in the future.

After Mr. Markle’s opening words, five members of the Faculty Council encouraged students to exemplify the standards and ideals of the NJHS: scholarship, service, leadership, citizenship, and character. Ms. Bryan spoke to the students about the importance of the value of scholarship, Mrs. Curtner presented the value of leadership, Ms. Hames presented service, Mr. Galla presented citizenship, and Mr. Canon presented character. After the members of the Faculty Council spoke on the five NJHS virtues, Mr. David Bradley, State Board of Education member spoke to the students and audience members on the importance of education. Odyssey Academy is thankful to Mr. Bradley for taking the time to attend and speak at the event.

Mrs. Snyder, the NJHS sponsor, spoke next presenting to the students, friends, and families the second part of the night’s program; the induction ceremony. Mr. Markle stood and led the students through the NJHS pledge. Students then signed their names to the Odyssey Academy National Junior Honor Society registry, received their NJHS certificate and membership card, and shook the hands of the Faculty Council and Mr. Bradley.

Mrs. Goodman ended the evening by thanking students, friends, and family members for attending the ceremony and by reading a proclamation made by Mayor Joe Jaworski, proclaiming April 3, 2012, Odyssey Academy Day.

Congratulations to the ten charter members of the Odyssey Academy Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society: Zoe Barrie, De Aun Dorise, Cassie Halvorsen, Brigitte Jerez, Ashley Jones, Chelsey Milina, Alex Quintero, Ben Ramsell, Franz Torres, Lawrence Zepeda.

To be eligible for membership consideration, students must meet a grade point average requirement and maintain high standards of leadership, service, citizenship, and character. Students were evaluated and selected by the Faculty Council of the chapter to be the charter members.

The National Junior Honor Society ranks as one of the oldest and most prestigious national organizations for students. Chapters exist in more than 6,000 schools and, since 1929, millions of students have been selected for membership. NJHS is sponsored nationally by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).
