OA Chess Club Going to State!

OA Chess Club

Odyssey Academy's Chess Club competed for the first time in the 2011 Houston Regional Chess Tournament which was organized by the Texas Charter School Academic and Athletic League. In the individual competition, Franz Torres came in 1st place winning the 6th - 8th grade division. The club came in 2nd place overall in the 6th - 8th grade division with a dominating score. Each of the club members, Yuewu Zhou (Captain), Franz Torres, Anthony Garza, and Kory Reimers all played very well helping to contribute to the teams total score.

Mr. Canon, the team's sponsor said, "We played strong and gained a lot of respect from our opponents." Even a high school teacher approached Mr. Canon and commented on the strength of the OA team. The team's performance earned a spot in the state tournament which will be held in Austin, Texas.

In addition each player's performance during matches, members also demonstrated sportsmanship by congratulating opponents they lost to and encouraging those they beat.

Congratulations Chess Club on a job well done, the OA Family is proud of you!
